From the author of Once Upon a Cowboy (“Sexy, charming, and perfectly heartwarming.”—Lauren Layne) comes another sweet novel of the Whisper Creek Ranch, where sizzling Montana men melt the most stubborn hearts.
After Alexis Maguire’s wedding day comes and goes without a groom, she decides that it’s time for a change. Tired of being the dependable, steady—and apparently boring—one, Alexis hopes that a cross-country road trip will help her loosen up and find her inner sparkle. Her first stop is the Whisper Creek Ranch, where the hot wranglers are sure to bring out her inner party girl. The trouble is, she can’t stand pretending to be someone she’s not—especially around the cowboy who tempts her to stay put.
Gunnar Peterson has spent six months working at Whisper Creek, and he’s never been happier. Having grown up an army brat, he’s ready to put down roots, and the only thing missing is a woman to share his life with. When Alexis blows into town, Gunnar thinks he may have met his match, despite the wild-child facade he sees right through. But Alexis swears she won’t settle down anytime soon—so it’s up to Gunnar to convince her that what she’s looking for . . . is right here.
Review
Ms. McGinnis has cornered the market on sweet romance because every book of hers I’ve read falls into that category and UNLUCKY IN LOVE is no different. It’s adorable and the characters are simple but very lovable. And, if you’re like me, the Whisper Creek ranch would be your next vacation spot, if it were real. Those descriptions of the mountains and the woods make me want to give up city living for the tranquil mountains.
Alexis Maguire’s love history has convinced her that she is cursed with being the ‘for-now’ girl and sooner or later she gets dumped for a better option, and her fiancé walking away two weeks before their wedding has only served to emphasize that belief. So she decides to make herself over and step one: leave her comfort zone. The best way to do so? Head out west and take a summer job as a ranch nurse in Whisper Creek, where she meets cowboy Gunnar Steele.
Gunnar is a charming gentleman and really sweet, which you think would have an effect on Alexis. Turns out her courage is only good for leaving Maine. Every adventure she attempts is a part of the plan to show her ex that she has become more adventurous and win him back. This is where usually you think a girl is crazy for trying to get a no-good ex back instead of rebounding with the hottie in front of her, but I can actually understand why Alexis was so stuck on getting her ex back and I really can’t blame her for being afraid to start all over again, especially when there was no chance of this being more than a summer thing. But I’m also glad that she grew more secure and comfortable with herself that she wasn’t afraid to dream of possibilities.
I loved Gunnar because he was so laid back and took life as it came but was willing to pull out all the stops when it came to things that mattered a lot. I loved how welcoming everyone was and darn if the effort they all made to get Gunnar and Alexis together didn’t make my heart happy.
I really enjoyed UNLUCKY IN LOVE because it’s sweet and easy, with very little drama and is perfect for when you need a very low dose of angst. If you enjoy really engaging friendships and dialogue, then this is the book for you.
