IT’S GONNA BE A WILD RIDE
Ben Noble needs to do some damage control. Fast. His heart has always been in ranching, but there’s no escaping the spotlight on his high-powered political family. Now the only thing that can restore his reputation is a getaway to the fresh air of Aspen, Colorado. Not to mention that the trip gives Ben a second chance to impress a certain gorgeous mountain guide. But Paige Harper is nothing like the shy girl he remembers . . . she’s so much more.Paige is serious about Ben, too: seriously annoyed that the playboy cowboy is using her mountain for his PR. Once upon a time, she fell for Ben’s aw-shucks charm, but the fairy tale didn’t end happily. Paige doesn’t intend to let down her guard again. But keeping their relationship all business and no pleasure may be harder than she thinks-especially if the moonlight, the Rockies, and a certain irresistible rancher have anything to say about it . . .
Review
Paige Harper finds it difficult to let anyone get close to her, with good reason. She feels like an outsider within her family and deeply feels the lack of support from a family that does not understand her ambitious dream to establish a therapy program geared towards the handicapped when she could be working at the family restaurant. Throw in being burned badly when she trusted the wrong man and the walls she has built up begin to make sense. Ben Noble is the first man she came close to letting in, in a long time but that did not end so well. One year later, Ben has returned and Paige is determined to keep him at an arm’s length and keep their interactions strictly professional because the fate of her program is in the balance and a lesser than stellar performance could jeopardize it. Too bad that Ben is not on the same page as she is.
Ben Noble is a charming daredevil, unapologetic about his privileged upbringing and all the perks that come with it, including his choice of attractive women but it’s the artless and outdoorsy mountain guide that has ensnared his attention for the last year. Their previous meeting ended on a low note and now that he’s returning to Aspen as part of a campaign to rebuild his political image, Ben is determined to make this second chance work for him. Unfortunately, Ben faces stiff opposition not just from Paige, but also from his mother and campaign manager who don’t think that Paige is the kind of woman that would fit in with his lifestyle as a senator.
SOMETHING LIKE LOVE was fun! Lots of drama (some of it annoying), lots of smoldering passion and great characters! I love Ben! His protectiveness of and devotion to his sister Julia, his pride in his family, which was the driving force behind his decision to run for public office and his refusal to accept failure in any form. He’s relentless in his pursuit of Paige, but somehow manages to not cross over into creepy territory. He pulls out all the stops to show her that he’s in it for the long haul. I love that he respected Paige’s ambitions and was sensitive to her fears.
Paige is no stranger to disappointment and her family’s lack of faith in her made me so mad, but she does not stay down for long and that is such an amazing thing about her. Her resistance to Ben was understandable just about as much as it was annoying, but I love how easily she was able to bond with Julia. I absolutely loved the simmering tension between Ben and Paige and enjoyed their journey to their happy ending, including the challenges they faced and how their thorny relationships with their families were fixed.
SOMETHING LIKE LOVE is all about family, dreams and love and dealing with the challenges all three can bring. This is my first time reading Ms. Richardson’s work but it definitely won’t be my last.
