Payton Vaughn’s trip to Puerto Vallarta for her friend’s wedding was her big escape from her ridiculously overbearing mother–oh, and that little matter with her cheating fiancé. Now, her flight’s been cancelled, and she’s crammed into a tiny car with the gorgeous-but-irritating best man.
Viva la road trip from hell…
Cruz Sorensen doesn’t have time to babysit some spoiled socialite, even if she is the future daughter-in-law of the man who could change the fortune of his family’s company. He has no business getting to know her better—not even for all the tequila in Mexico…until they wake up with grande-sized hangovers as man and wife.
Now Payton and Cruz must decide if they’ve reached the end of their journey…or the beginning of a new adventure.
Review
Payton Vaughn finds herself on the same flight to her best friend’s destination wedding in Mexico as Cruz Sorenson, the brother of the groom and the bane of her existence. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she discovers just before boarding her flight that the ‘pressing business meeting’ her own fiancé skipped the wedding trip for was anything but business. The cherry on top of all this however is the mechanical malfunction of their plane that results in a road trip across Mexico with none other than Cruz, which may not be such a bad thing after all because she gets a chance to see a different side of Cruz as he goes from the uptight, reserved and taciturn businessman to someone enjoying the adventure of their trip.
Cruz has always thought of Payton as a self-centered and high maintenance rich girl, an opinion which may be colored slightly by his own experiences with some of the country club set and the prejudices he faced both growing up as a half-Mexican and while building their construction company. Payton is actually hiding a smart, accomplished and ambitious person under her fun and bubbly personality and Cruz can’t resist the pull between them. Too bad that he has a lot on the line and getting involved with Payton is a sure way of destroying everything he’s worked so hard for and is on the verge of achieving. But driving through the beautiful countryside in the company of an attractive woman and indulging in some shots of tequila lead to some ill-advised choices and some funny moments.
Payton clearly sees Cruz for the workaholic he is and he initially came off as proud and obsessed with success, with a chip on his shoulder about wealthy people, but as the story went on, I saw that his reason for working so hard was because he wanted to make sure that his family was taken care of and earn his father’s approval.
Payton has pretty much let her mom run her life instead of standing up for herself but I love that she took back the reins, starting with kicking her fiancé to the curb, refusing to settle for less than she deserved and choosing to follow her dreams.
I had a lot of fun reading HER ACCIDENTAL HUSBAND because it was just that enjoyable. It has humor, adventure and romance but it was also sweet. I love Payton and her vivacious personality and I laughed so hard at her lack of a filter, especially the movie reference at the beginning of their trip.
My only minor issue was the lack of communication and misunderstandings between them but I enjoyed all of it and I’ll definitely recommend HER ACCIDENTAL HUSBAND.
