Trent Rockwell has it all—a thriving legal practice, co-ownership of the Rockwell Resort, and a big, loving family. And yet his failed marriage to Reese Nicholson has haunted him for ten long years. Now that he has moved back to Cape Cod Bay to help run his family’s resort, he is surrounded by memories of Reese…and he can’t stop longing for the woman he’d always believed was his one true love.…

At nineteen, artist Reese Nicholson was swept off her feet by the handsome, charming, and incredibly sensual Trent Rockwell. After a whirlwind courtship, they married and moved to New York City, where they hoped all of their personal and professional dreams would come true. But six months later, Reese returned to Rockwell Island brokenhearted and disillusioned.

For a decade, Trent and Reese carefully kept their distance. But all it takes is one accidental late-night encounter to immediately stir the desires they have both tried to bury deep. Powerless to resist the heat between them, every passionate kiss, loving caress, and heartfelt apology draws them closer together. So close that they can’t help but wonder if the promises they once made to love each other forever are still true…

Review

I really love that this series is all about the romantic fairy-tale, sweet, soft and passionate, with little to no conflict. It’s more about the journey the characters take to their happy ending.

Trent Rockwell found the love of his life a decade ago, but lost her due his blind ambition for success in his career. He’s always regretted the end of his marriage and his success feels very hollow, considering all he gave up for it. Now that he’s back on Rockwell island and in close proximity with her, he can’t help but remember how good together they were and is willing to give his all to get her back.

It took Reese Nicholson a long time to get over Trent and she’s been very careful to keep her distance from him, but a chance encounter with him opens the floodgates to the memories she had locked away and now she’s drowning in what-ifs. With Trent making no secret that he wants her back, it’s hard for her to resist him when she wants the same thing, but her heartbreak from their breakup is enough to make her cautious about opening up to him again.

One thing I realized as I read this book, especially since Reese and Trent were so in love with each other but couldn’t make it work the first time, is that there really can be a wrong time, even for two people who are totally in love and ten years ago was it for them. Trent was so focused on achieving success that he neglected Reese and Reese failed to communicate how she felt and instead chose to run away from the problems in their relationship. Now that they are older and more mature, can they make it work? Will Reese give Trent a chance to show her that’s he’s changed? Will Trent be able to keep Reese as his number one priority?

Both Trent and Reese were very likable characters and the chemistry between them very intense. Even though the plan was to talk and find closure, I love that they were able to move on to become friends and give their relationship another chance. I really enjoyed that they were honest about the roles they each played in their failed relationship and how hard they worked on communication.

I fell in love with Rockwell island in the first book and I still feel the same way about its beautiful scenery and friendly and warm people as well as the close-knit Rockwell family and Reese’s supportive family and friends. CAPE COD PROMISES is sweet, romantic and the perfect second chance story and I look forward to the next story.
