When her secretly filmed tryst shows up on the internet, Michelle Alger goes on the run. She has no choice. Not only was her one-night stand the son of a US senator, but he’s been murdered—and she’s the number one suspect. With both the senator and an avenging drug lord on her trail, her life is in danger. There’s only man she can trust. He saved her once, but will he still be her hero six years later?

Captain Jeremy Malone and the rest of Delta Squad have the senator’s order: find the mystery woman who killed my son. But to Jeremy, she’s no mystery. Six years ago his team of Green Berets rescued her from the torturous clutches of a Colombian cartel, and he’s never forgotten her. His personal and covert mission: find Michelle before anyone else. When he and Michelle do meet again, the sparks are explosive and consuming. They’re also dangerous as hell.

Because with each new bit of evidence, Jeremy suspects that Michelle’s innocence may be a ruse—a beautiful trap set by a woman who has even more secrets yet to bare.

Review

A few pages into this book and my first thought was: “who goes to a South American country and wanders the rain-forest without armed military escort?” I wouldn’t! And if I had to, I’d have to have an exceptional reason and a battalion of troops along with me as well as some air support! Unfortunately for our heroine, her decision to explore the Colombian rain-forest leads to the most horrific experience of her life. Michelle Alger was an exchange student on a trip to Colombia when she was captured and tortured by a cartel until she was rescued by a specialized military team led by Captain Jeremy Malone. Even though their interaction was very brief, a powerful bond was forged between them, a bond that would lead to them being reunited six years later.

It’s been six years since Colombia and Michelle has mostly kept to herself but the one time she lets her guard down, she becomes embroiled in a murder and goes on the run. Out of options, she contacts Jeremy for help. What she doesn’t know is that Jeremy is a part of a clandestine group of operators headed by the senator whose son she’s accused of killing and he has his orders regarding her.

What follows is an exciting story of unending suspense, intense action and an unbreakable bond that ends in forever love. Both Michelle and Jeremy are unprepared for the strength of the attraction between them and Jeremy finds himself torn between following the orders he’s been given and protecting Michelle.

SHADOW OF DOUBT exceeded my expectations in every way and has netted Ms. DePaul a place at the top of my list of must-read authors because I was completely drawn in by the writing. The story is like a giant puzzle and only the reader has all the pieces and the task of putting them together to form a picture. Everything appears to be working against the characters and they can’t just catch a break!

Speaking of characters, Michelle was a warrior in my opinion. Her experiences were enough to break even a hardened soldier, but she kept her head up and fought to regain control of her life. And she was exactly what Jeremy needed. Jeremy was a man hardened by war and loss but with Michelle in his life, he has hope. I was not expecting how emotionally affected I would be by their bond and I loved that Michelle stood up to him and the rest of the team when needed.

I really enjoy stories where there is a lot of interaction with secondary characters without the main characters being lost and that was one reason why I loved SHADOW OF DOUBT so much. The secondary characters are so much a part of what happens with the main characters that the story wouldn’t be what it is without them. SBG put together a motley crew of people who each have a story to tell and whose personal experiences benefit the entire group in some way.

I loved SHADOW OF DOUBT so much that even before I had finished it, I purchased the first book in the series and was on the author’s website looking for information on the rest of the series.
