Haunted by his time in Iraq, former soldier Schwartz Patton goes off the grid, retreating deep into Montana’s untamed wilderness. Now, ten years into his self-imposed solitude, his brother tracks him down and asks for a favor. A woman is in danger, and she needs help…and Schwartz is the only one who can protect her.
Designer-loving city girls like Janelle Keebler don’t belong in the wilderness. Unless, of course, they’re witnesses to a murder by their psycho drug-trafficking ex-husbands. Still, Janelle can’t help the immediate physical response she has to her sexy-as-sin protector that leaves her wanting more than she could have ever imagined. Even if he does make terrible coffee…
Every word, every touch, every kiss ignites a need Schwartz thought he’d lost forever. He can’t stop the desperate attraction simmering between him and Janelle, even if he wanted to. Even if it means it could get them both killed.
I enjoyed the first book in this series so much that I was hoarding books two and three for the perfect moment. Well, I can’t hold on to them now since I’ve now read the fourth!
Schwartz Patton is the oldest of the Patton boys and very much the recluse. Following the Patton family tradition, he joined the military but his final mission ended badly and his guilt about what happened had him choosing a life of solitude and it’s been a decade since he had contact with most of his family. However, he’ll do anything for them and when his brother asks for his help to protect his fiancee’s sister, Schwartz is quick to step up.
Janelle Keebler had the misfortune of marrying a drug-dealer, but in her defense he told her he was into pharmaceuticals, only he didn’t mention that the pharmaceuticals were of the illegal variety. After witnessing him commit a crime, she is now on the run in fear for her life and where’s the best place place to hide out? A rustic cabin in the wilderness of Montana, of course! And the perfect companion would be taciturn and rugged mountain man.
Janelle is fun, bubbly and has a great sense of humor so it’s no surprise that she’s able to get a smile out of Schwartz in record time and their attraction is instant. However, Schwartz has got his eye on the goal of keeping her safe and he will not be distracted, having learned that lesson the hard way. What he doesn’t expect is Janelle’s relentlessness and they final give into their attraction. But that’s not all there is to it. Janelle has the ability to see beyond the surface with Schwartz to the good man inside and has him opening up to people and rethinking his decision to isolate himself from his family. She also makes him realize that what they have going on between them is what they need – to love each other and support each other.
I’m a city girl through and through and would only do rustic if the comforts of home are available, so I completely empathized with Janelle’s shock at the less than ideal living arrangements but surprisingly she adopts to mountain living very easily.
I’ve enjoyed every of Tawna Fenske’s books that I’ve read and PROTECTOR FOR HIRE is no different. Fun dialogue, a bit of suspense and a lot of love and family makes this a treat to read and a great end to the series.
