Jennifer Chance’s Rule Breakers series turns up the heat as a wealthy playboy and a beautiful con artist engage in a high-stakes game of seduction.
As dominating in business as he is in bed, Rand Sterling Winston IV always gets what he wants. And even before he realizes that she’s scammed him into paying triple the cost for her friend’s painting, he wants Dani Michaels. To catch her alone, Rand demands that she personally deliver his purchase. The attraction between them is immediate and electric, and he knows she feels it, too. So when the part-time petty thief rebuffs his advances, he gives her a choice: a night in jail or an evening with him.
Despite her checkered past, Dani has never met someone like Rand: brooding, intense, and oh so tempting. Only a man with a broken soul could make control feel this dangerous. Still, when Rand proposes a no-strings, no-holds-barred affair, Dani’s more than a little intrigued. It’ll be the trickiest con she’s ever run and a chance to indulge her steamiest fantasies—nothing more. But as their encounters grow increasingly intimate, Dani uncovers a vulnerable side to Rand’s steely exterior and opens her heart to the ultimate risk.
Risk It is a really fitting title for Dani and Rand’s story especially as both of them have to risk everything for love.
Dani Michaels is a grifter and a thief who lives for the thrill of the con game. Due to her harsh upbringing in foster care, she is very distrustful and keeps almost everyone at a distance. In her opinion, everyone is a potential mark and Rand Sterling Winston IV is just the latest in a long line of marks.
Rand is a rich businessman and playboy from a long line of Boston’s elite; adept at games both in and out of the boardroom and used to getting what he wants. Rand is intrigued by Dani the moment he sets eyes on her and after being conned into paying three times the cost for a painting by Dani, he gets the perfect opportunity to get her alone.
Dani and Rand are very attracted to each other and Rand also sees her as a challenge, one he intends to conquer. When he proposes a 30-day arrangement to spend time with her (sex optional), Dani can’t resist the temptation he presents and the opportunity to beat him at his game. It doesn’t hurt that he’s offering a sizable sum, which is going to come in very handy.
In spite of the differences in their backgrounds, Dani and Rand had very similar experiences growing up and what begins as a game of one-upmanship, a battle of wills soon becomes more, with both of them battling painful memories from their pasts and fighting to retain control of the game while trying to break down each other’s walls. Even the sex is very much a game as they both push each other’s boundaries in explicit and erotic ways. I think there should’ve been a warning label: Scorching hot sex ahead!
Beneath the games, both Dani and Rand are very damaged, hurt by the very people that should have protected them. Dani is independent and strong and her tough exterior hides a very kind and selfless heart. Very surprisingly, Rand also hides a generous heart under the asshole-y playboy facade. Both were very unpredictable and kept me reading to see what they would get up to next. Even though there is justification, I was quite uncomfortable with the unapologetic stealing and that they collaborated in some of the heists.
Risk It is a very entertaining and steamy read, with well-matched and enjoyable characters and a great build-up, although the ending was too abrupt.
