Charlie Sykes takes everything and everyone at face value—and believes life would be a lot easier if everyone else did, too. Aussie Jace Knight, international hotelier and purported playboy, has never met anyone like the absurdly literal and beautiful American who applies for his personal assistant position. The trouble is, how do you pursue a woman whose definition of flirting comes straight out of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary? That, and he’s not the only one after Charlie. Seems Mr. Knight might not be a reformed criminal after all.

Soon, Charlie’s immersed in a whirlwind of international espionage that takes her from the hip streets of Sydney to the majestic Great Barrier Reef and the wild, desolate outback. A dangerous trap’s being set, but how will Charlie protect herself and prevent a tragic betrayal, when she can’t even sort out what her heart’s telling her?

Review

Charlie Sykes packed up and moved to Australia on a whim, after her mother passed and takes a job as an assistant for hotelier, Jace Knight. Charlie is not your everyday female. She has got the bombshell looks and the body, but Charlie is socially inept in spite of her high IQ and struggles to relate and understand in social situations. She is literal, logical, quite blunt and has no filters (reminds me of Temperance Brennan from Bones). Just as she settles into her job, complications arise and she is forced to spy on her boss, who is alleged to be a crime boss or face deportation. To further complicate issues, Charlie finds herself falling for her boss and getting involved with him.

Playboy hotelier Jace Knight can get any woman he wants but he finds himself intrigued by his new assistant who does not seem to know her own allure. The timing is all wrong for his relationship with Charlie as he is working to shed the more unsavory business associations he has and become a legitimate businessman, but he can’t resist her and soon she gets caught up in the intrigue surrounding him.

This is my first book by Lesley Young and I really enjoyed it. The Australian has everything that I look out for in a book: romance, suspense, intrigue and above all, great dialogue! It was a delight seeing the world through Charlie’s eyes and she had me chuckling so many times at how literal she was and how she talked. Since the story was told from Charlie’s POV, she kind of overshadowed Jace but he was the perfect complement to her. He had just the required amount of patience to deal with how different she was and I would have loved his POV.

The slang was a little bit hard to get into and it made it initially difficult for me to get into the book, but the action and intrigue more than made up for it. May I suggest The Spaniard for your next book, Ms. Young?

About Lesley Young

Lesley Young is an award-winning Canadian journalist by day, and compulsive novelist by night. Her debut novel, Sky’s End (Soulmate Publishing, 2013) hit #9 on Amazon’s sci-fi romance paid best-seller list in its first three months of release. Not too long after that, she started dreaming up quirky heroines who lose their hearts to extremely powerful, imperfect heroes, while on dangerous adventures abroad. She called it the Crime Royalty Romance series, and kicked it off with The Frenchman, which landed her an agent at Spencerhill Associates. Lesley’s never sure who or what will pop up in her imagination next. The Irishman? The Spaniard? The Englishman? She’s taking requests!
