It happens whenever wolf shifter Roni Axton is near Marcus Fuller: a crackle of sexual awareness that’s intoxicating…and deeply annoying. Marcus is a pack enforcer who oozes power, but Roni is lethal in her own right—nothing like the flirty females who flock around him. Even still, his possessive gaze makes one thing clear. Marcus has singled her out for seduction, and he wants to make her sit up and beg.
No matter how aloof and unfazed Roni acts, Marcus can tell she wants him. When a brutal attack by a jackal pack forces them to work together, it’s the perfect opportunity for Marcus to chip away at her defenses—until he falls into his own trap, completely unprepared for the intensity of their connection. Roni is the only one who’s ever seen past his shifter charm and discovered the man hiding beneath it. And for Marcus, claiming Roni once will mean needing her forever.
Suzanne Wright’s Phoenix Packs series was my introduction to the shifter sub-genre of PNR and honestly I can never read any shifter story without comparing it to this series. Filled with very hot alpha wolf shifters and the strong, fierce and sassy women who capture their hearts, the series is funny and super steamy and Dark Instincts is no different.
Roni Axton is an enforcer for the Mercury Pack, a dominant she-wolf who can take on and defeat male alpha wolves, tough, powerful and an all-round badass but when Marcus Fuller turns those blue eyes of his on her, she feels like a prey in a hunter’s cross-hairs. Frankly, Roni finds the sexual chemistry between them irritating because, even though she’s got a serious case of the hots for Marcus, she knows she is not as attractive as the flirty and pretty women he’s dated. She’s a tomboy, socially awkward and a loner and can’t understand why Marcus is interested in her.
Marcus wants Roni and no matter how indifferent and aloof she acts around him, he knows that she is just as interested in him. Like the hunter he is, Marcus pursues Roni with focus, patience and determination, slowing wearing her down until he gets what he wants. What’s unexpected is the intense bond between them and as much as they fight their connection, they also see beneath the surface to what’s inside. Roni can see that Marcus’s carefree and charming personality hides an intense, emotional and dangerous wolf with secrets. Marcus sees the insecurities Roni hides behind her sarcastic and sassy exterior and he’s so protective of her.
Marcus was a very huge surprise to me in Dark Instincts. From previous books, he is well-known as a playful, fun and flirty charmer who loves the ladies. Now he is showing another side to him: patient, steady, protective, possessive. Roni is my second favorite heroine in the series (second to Taryn) because in addition to being smart, sassy and lethal, she is very comfortable with who she is. I loved the ease of their relationship and the fact that there was no drama. They accepted how they felt for each other and moved on from there. They were real with each other and I enjoyed their playful banter. I also love that Marcus respected her abilities as an enforcer and even when she faced danger, he trusted her to overcome it.
The story would not be complete without glimpses into the lives of other characters we have been introduced to in previous books and I love that Ms. Wright did not skimp on those details.
Dark Instincts is the perfect addition to this addictive series: a story full of humor, lots of hot and steamy sex and some suspense and mystery and I hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next book in the series. I love this series and highly recommend it!
