Gillian‘s turbulent life has never been easy, but nothing prepared her for the moment of violence that sends her and her little brother running from San Francisco to her grandfather’s ranch in Montana. A man she’s never met. She learned long ago not to trust anyone, but she’ll do anything to keep her brother safe and give him the happy childhood she never had. When she meets Blake Bowden, a strong, silent, gorgeous cowboy who teaches her about the ranch and rescued horses-animals who have been through hell and back, just as she has-Gillian begins to feel at ease for the first time in memory. In fact, she even starts to feel happy. But in her world happiness has always been fleeting, and she’s not sure she can believe in it or the man who has quickly found his way into her heart.
Blake has everything he’s ever wanted: a partnership on a ranch that allows him to spend his day in the saddle training racehorses. His life is good, steady, uncomplicated…until the most beautiful, haunted looking woman arrives at Three Peaks Ranch. If he wants to keep his ideal life, his partner’s granddaughter is entirely off limits, but Gillian awakens a protective instinct in Blake that he can’t ignore…and ignites a passion he shouldn’t feel. But as Gillian heals and finds her way back into the world, Blake knows that he’s found the one thing that he never knew he was missing. And when danger comes close, he will do anything he must to keep Gillian safe…even if it means risking his life’s dream.

While At Wolf Ranch was all about the gripping suspense, When It’s Right is heavy on the emotions and had me tearing up at the first chapter. Gillian Tucker has suffered long-term physical and emotional abuse at the hands of people she should have trusted with her life – her parents – and she does not trust easily. Gillian has taken care of her younger brother, Justin from birth and when faced with danger, she protects him and her decision leads her to her grandfather’s ranch in Montana where she meets Blake Bowden. Gillian has never had anyone do anything good for her and is wary and distrustful of the motives of both her grandfather and Blake but is forced to accept help from them due to her physical injuries and the fact that she hopes that the ranch would be a chance for Justin to have a normal childhood.
Blake Bowden is a horse-trainer, partner with Gillian’s grandfather in the Three Peaks Ranch and is also the younger brother of Gabe from At Wolf Ranch. Blake has been a little envious of his brothers, Gabe and Caleb’s relationships and when he meets Gillian, he wants the same with her. However he realizes that her experiences have made her skittish and he has to work on getting her to trust him.
Gillian is a great character. My heart just about broke for her in the beginning, but her strength and her will are remarkable. She fights hard to heal inside and outside, to trust in basic human goodness and to love.
And Blake. How can’t one fall in love with Blake and where can I find one of him? He was so patient with Gillian and so protective of her. He didn’t demand more than she was willing to give and as much as he wanted her, waited for her to come to him. When It’s Right is a deeply moving story about learning to trust in humanity and love and worth reading.
