Gabriel Ludlow, Viscount Everhart will never marry, and thus is sure to win the bachelor’s wager against his friends. Assuming, of course, that his deepest secret—a certain letter containing a marriage proposal made in a moment of passion—doesn’t surface. After all, without Calliope Croft to tempt him, there’s no danger in losing. Or in falling in love.
Calliope wants revenge. Five years ago, an anonymous love letter stole her heart and ultimately broke it. Now, Casanova has struck again, and Calliope vows to unmask the scoundrel, stopping him from breaking any more hearts. Yet, time and again, Gabriel distracts her from her task, until she can no longer deny that something about him calls to her…
Gabriel was a fool to deny the depth of his feelings for Calliope, but the threat that kept him from her five years ago remains. Now, he must choose between two paths: break her heart all over again or finally succumb to loving her…at the risk of losing everything.
THE ELUSIVE LORD EVERHART is a great start to Vivienne Lorret’s new series, The Rakes of Fallow Hall. Five years ago, Calliope Croft turned down a marriage proposal to wait for her true love, the author of an anonymous letter to her who was dubbed Casanova when more letters penned by him to other ladies surfaced after she received hers. Heartbroken, she vows to expose the identity of the author.
Gabriel Ludlow, Viscount Everhart is the man behind the Casanova letters. Five years ago, he fell in love with Calliope Croft and wrote her an anonymous letter expressing his love and proposing marriage, but subsequently developed cold feet and wrote several other letters as a diversion.
Calliope is an eternal optimist and still harbors hope that she will find out the identity of the writer. While on a trip with her brother, they make a stop at Fallow Hall where they find Lord Everhart in residence. There is talk of another letter which increases Calliope’s determination to unmask Casanova and find out if he is also at Fallow Hall. Thus begins a battle of wills and wits between Gabriel and Calliope, with Gabriel creating ways to keep Calliope occupied and off the search.
There were several interesting secondary characters introduced from the beginning (most of them fun), but Gabriel and Calliope still stood out particularly for their evenly matched wits and the intensity of their attraction to each other. The wager between Gabriel and his mischief-making friends and their attempts to make him lose added a fun element to the story. With enjoyable dialogue, THE ELUSIVE LORD EVERHART is a fun and passion-filled historical romance and I look forward to more from Ms. Lorret.
