Lady Portia Flagstaff has loved her brother’s best friend Grayson Devlin since she was sixteen and tried to gain his attention just as long, but he only considers her to be like a younger sister. Portia loves adventure and so after their recent interlude, she is willing when she receives a summons to meet him for a romantic tryst. However, being kidnapped and sold into a sultan’s harem is the last thing she expects. Now she has to rely on him to rescue her and save her honor, but she will settle for nothing less than his heart.
Portia is a very interesting character. She is independent, feisty and daring. After a sick and bedridden childhood, she has decided to experience life to the fullest and will try anything at least once. And she wants love. Grayson’s love. Growing up as the only girl with five bothers in a family where her father openly loved and cherished her mother, she is determined to have the same and will settle for nothing less. How can she convince Grayson to open his heart up?
Grayson Devlin, Lord Blackwood is notorious for his sexual prowess and highly desired for the same. But that is not all there is to him. Grayson is a man that has lost a lot of loved ones. First his family in a accident and then his best friend and Portia’s elder brother at war and has chosen not to love anyone again to avoid the pain of losing loved ones. He has specific needs in a wife – proper and elegant and poised and Portia does not meet any of his requirements. When he rescues her and realizes that he will have to marry her avoid scandal, he is willing as long as he does not have to risk his heart. He does not count on Portia’s obstinacy and finds himself fighting to resist her charms and well as keep her safe, because Portia’s kidnapping was part of a larger plot to discredit him and ruin him and his group of friends, known as the Libertine Scholars.
This is my first read by Bronwen Evans and I really enjoyed it, so much so that I am looking forward to the next in the series and will be going back to catch up on the previous books. I loved the characters, especially Portia. I could not get enough of her. She is adventurous and fearless and a little bit reckless too, but very smart and just the perfect match for a cautious man like Grayson. Grayson is a mass of contradictions: fiercely protective of Portia, but also very possessive and territorial, even while he stubbornly resists falling in love with her. I love a good mystery and enjoyed the story and the fact that the relationship between Portia and Grayson was at the heart of it, with the added mystery of the unknown villain. Ms. Evans has done a great job of building a shadowy villainous character without giving much information on the character and I am curious to discover who and why. A Touch of Passion has it all: adventure, passion and mystery.
